Diaper covers are hands down the most versatile adult cloth diapering option. Not only are they necessary to wear over a prefold or fitted diaper for a moisture barrier, but they are frequently worn over disposables for an extra moisture barrier. Some companies even suggest using diaper covers with disposable liners for a hybrid system.

Over the  years, I’ve had many people tell me that they love using a cloth cover over their disposable diapers for extra protection, particularly at night.

Plus, diaper covers have the most options available from sizing to fabric type when it comes to cloth incontinence products.

The following list is a combination of products recommended to me by my customers over the years as well as best sellers on various websites. I emailed 11 companies that sell adult cloth diaper covers to ask what their best sellers are.

I have included just products from those companies that emailed me back. I want to make sure to ONLY recommend the best of the best, especially since diaper covers are among the most prevalent styles of cloth options available.

If you want a more comprehensive list of diaper covers, you can check out my Ultimate Guide to Cloth Incontinence Products. In this, I have 24 covers listed in nylon, plastic/vinyl, rubber, and PUL categories.

I list diaper cover options for nylon, plastic/vinyl, rubber, and PUL. Not to mention products in every other cloth incontinence category 🙂

How to Choose a Diaper Cover

Alas, short of buying one of each and wearing them a few times to see what works best for you, picking a cover is a bit of a guessing game. But again, I put together this list for you to at least narrow things down a bit!

Here are some questions to ask yourself when choosing a diaper cover:

1. What will the cover be covering?

For example, if you’ve got a super thick diaper, you’re going to need a full coverage option. Whereas if you only need to cover a disposable, you can get away with a lower rise, narrower crotch cover.

2. Do I want a pull on or front closure style?

Pull on diaper covers are super easy, but require disrobing. Front closure covers can be discreetly changed, but can be difficult to find.

3. How much do I want to spend?

As before mentioned, diaper covers are affordable and plentiful. However, some fabrics and styles are more expensive than others. Not to mention the fact that you have to take into consideration shipping. Never underestimate shipping costs! In fact, shipping costs can make a cheaper product more expensive, depending on where they’re coming from and where you are.

4. Do I want to make my own?

If this is you, you’re in luck! My diaper cover sewing pattern collection will be coming out at the end of April! There will be 6 covers in youth and adult sizes. To stay in the know (and receive a discount!) sign up for my VIP Pattern Group

Best Adult Diaper Covers

InControl Silence Pant

InControl Silence Pant

$14.50 – $36.99

According to InControl, the Silence Pant is their best selling diaper cover. Made from PUL, the cover is much easier to care for and wash than their PVC counterparts. Plus, PUL fabric has a little bit of stretch, which gives a better fit.

Available in a variety of colors, this is a trim, light weight cover. InControl definitely gets extra points for their size inclusivity. The silence pant comes in sizes XXS (youth) all the way up to size 8X. These covers are made in Canada.

KINS Nylon Taffeta Pull On Waterproof Pants

    $23.00

While Babykins never emailed me back, and have never responded to any of my inquiries over the years (do they respond to you?), I’m including this cover in my list because it has been recommended to me by a couple of people who just love it.

Made from polyester fibers, nylon taffeta is a tightly woven lightweight material. These breathable covers not only stand up to use, but can also go into the washer. Soft lycra elastic offers a snug fit along leg and waist openings. Available in white, blue, pink, and yellow. Comes in sizes small – 3XL.

    Kleinerts Dura Cool Nylon Pant

    $24.98+

According to Kleinerts, their DuraCool Nylon Incontinence Pant is way better than any vinyl option. Also made in the US, the nylon is a polyurethane laminated fabric like PUL and offers a quiet, breathable diaper cover option. The latex free elastic is enclosed by the nylon fabric.

Their rating system is a little confusing, but I think that’s because the product is sold in multiple places. The price point is similar across platforms, so this cover interests you, check out shipping costs to find the cheapest option.

Proper laundering will get this cover to last 50-100 times.

    Protex Collectors Edition Cover

Protex Collector’s Edition Plastic Pants and Brooks Pant

    $27.95+ and $23.95+

Use code ONION20 for 20% off your next purchase!

Protex’s best selling diaper covers are their Collector’s Edition Plastic Pants, which are made from a 4 gauge vinyl. They have sold these since 1994 and they feature vinyl covered elastics and heat welded seams.

The “Brooks” pant comes in for a close second. Protex created these in the 90’s when Gerber stopped making their V.I.P. plastic pants. Many of you know what I’m talking about because you’ve lamented to me that Gerber no longer makes adult sized plastic pants!

Anyway, Allison at Protex told me that the founder of Protex – Bert Brooks – originally called the pants “I Can’t Believe it’s NOT Gerber,” but due to copyright concerns, the name got changed to “Brooks.” So if you’re missing those Gerber pants, check these out, lol!

Both of these products are made in the US by Gary Manufacturing. In case you’re not familiar with Gary (see next cover), they make and sell high quality cloth incontinence products. So you can be sure that Protex’s pants are well made. They will last 50-100 washes when properly cared for.

Gary Pull-On Enclosed Elastic Plastic Pants

    $22.99 – $32.99

As I mentioned before, Gary Manufacturing is located in the US and creates durable, well made incontinence products. One of LL Medico’s best selling diaper covers is their Gary Pull-On Enclosed Plastic Pants. These plastic pants get big points in the reviews for soft, quiet feel when worn.

They also feature medical grade, 4 gauge plastic, heat-welded seams (too bad that’s something that’s not accessible to the home sewer, lol!) and enclosed elastic. If elastic irritates your skin, then you definitely want to choose a cover with enclosed elastic. Luckily, there are several to choose from. Proper washing always makes things last longer and you can get a couple years out of these.

If you need a larger size, these pants go from XS – 5XL.

     Ecoable Diaper Cover

    $26.99

Front closure diaper covers are surprisingly difficult to find, especially considering that so many adult cloth diapers come with front closures. If you use a front closure diaper cover and love it, please let me know what brand it is!! (hello@littleonioncloth.com). Ecoable’s diaper cover is made from PUL and has gussets.

This diaper cover also has flaps in the front and back so that inserts, prefolds, or even disposable liners can be tucked. The cover has 3 rows of snaps for a secure fit and rise snaps to customize the height of the cover to your preference.
